What is Instinct Testing?
The purpose and goal of an instinct test is to determine if your dog has any natural desire to herd livestock. It is important to note that not all dogs respond on their first try! A list of breeds with herding or working traits as part of their breeding development can be found here.
The first thing we will do with your dog is have him or her go into a round pen (meaning no corners for the goats to hide in!) and see what happens. A trained person will be in the pen with both the dog and livestock, so no one gets hurt. You'll be safe just watching from the outside this time! Once that is done, you'll have time to talk about what happened, what instincts your dog displayed, and what your options are from there! How can I get my dog tested?
Instinct testing is offered by appointment. It is beneficial for new people to also get to see other dogs being tested, plus it's fun!
